How do you install deal ii on Mac OSX?

Here is my experience with installation for a Mac, running OS X 10.5.xx on an Intel processor:

  1. Download the package from the deal.ii website. I used deal.ii 6.2.1, and downloaded only the source code.
  2. Unzip and untar the downloaded archive. You should see a directory named deal.ii
  3. Open a terminal, navigate to the deal.ii directory
  4. At the command line, type ./configure This may take a while.
  5. Then, type make all. Again, be patient.
  1. In your .profile file add the line

export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH:/Users/yourpath/deal.II/lib

where yourpath = path of where you put the directory. This fix is courtesy Roger Donaldson. If you don't have this file, create it. Or if you already have a .bash_profile file, put the line in there.

  1. You should now be ready to try things out. Navigate (in the terminal) to the examples directory, and for example, go to the step-2 subdirectory
  2. At the command line, type make

and then make run

  1. That's it! You're ready to play. Change the .cc codes in the tutorials at will. I found the documentation on the website about these tutorials quite helpful, and they have suggestions on things to modify.
  2. For visualizing the outputs, you will need something like GMV. The tutorials output data into different formats, so you should try different viewers. I found GMV fine.
